15.09.04 New Worker Welcome

We welcome our new playworker, Sue Halpen, to the PlaySpaces team and also, Matt Duffy returns to the project today as well.  Good luck to you both.

13.09.04 Staff Changes

Both Jen Akkurt and Kate Frost leave us today.  Kate is going to university for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and Jen is to spend more time with her family.

10.09.04 Farewell, Gemma

Goodbye to Gemma Paddock, who is going back to university after helping us out in the shop during the summer.

07.09.04 Another Radio Interview

Today, Steve Chan (Senior Play Development Officer) was interviewed on 7 Waves Community Radio 87.7 FM on the lunchtime 'Around and About' programme.  The interviewer was Jo Kershaw and the topics covered in the 16 minute interview were; Wirral Play Council, bullying, and the Outreach Play Project.

06.09.04 Special Needs Refurbishment Completed

Decorating work has finished in the main hall of the Wirral Play Development Centre and it is now looking very bright and colourful.  The children and staff are very happy with the new look.

03.09.04 New Arrival!

03.09.04 Staff Changes

Now the summer schemes have finished, we say goodbye to Lily Clough and Mike for another year.  Lily will soon be starting a college course in media, while Mike will remain in the entertainment business.

02.09.04 Micha Maternity Leave

Playwork+ will have to do without Micha Whelligan for a while as she goes on maternity leave today.
Her first child is expected later this month.

29.08.04 Birkenhead Summer Festival

The PlaySpaces team were at this year's summer festival in Birkenhead Park.  Over the two days they provided free face painting, games and play activities for the children.

29.08.04 Farewell, Ian, Matt and Dom

Goodbye to Ian Dew, Matt Duffy and Dom Parker, who have been working as temporary playworkers for the Outreach Play Project during the summer.

23.08.04 Special Needs Refurbishment

While the Special Needs Scheme is on post-summer shutdown, the main hall at the Wirral Play Development Centre is to get a makeover.  A big thank you to Bert, who is hard at work redecorating in time for the group's return in a fortnight.

18.08.04 WPC Radio Interview

13.08.04 Playworker Party

Wirral Play Council's annual summer party was held today for all the staff and playworkers who have worked so hard over the last few weeks in playschemes across the Wirral.  DJ Carl once again provided the sounds.

12.08.04 Playday 2004

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Hillary Jones opened this year's Playday event in Royden Park, Frankby.  'Play Around The World' was the theme this year and was attended by more than 500 children.
Thank you to all the staff and visiting artists who helped to make this event even better than last year.

09.08.04 N.R.F. Work Continues

Workers from Timberplay began construction of the new outdoor play area at Livingstone Street Play & Community Centre.
The work is expected to be finished at the end of August.

06.08.04 N.R.F. Play Equipment Installed

The new play equipment at both Gautby Road and Beechwood Play & Community Centres is now complete  Gautby Road has a new play house and Beechwood have a new hexagonal play hut.  Both items have been made from safe, natural materials.

04.08.04 Children In Need Award

Wirral Play Council's Special Needs group has been awarded £ 4,043.00 from the BBC's Children In Need appeal.  The money will go towards specialised equipment and refurbishment of the centre as well as a computer and digital camera for the children to use.

03.08.04 Pacific Donation

The Special Needs group would like to thank The Pacific public house, Birkenhead, for their kind donation of £ 100.00 which will go towards buying books for the children's library.

02.08.04 NRF Work Begins

Building work began today installing two new pieces of outdoor play equipment at Gautby Road and Beechwood Play & Community Centres.  These projects are to be completed over the next week with funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
Livingstone Street Play & Community Centre will also benefit from this award when work starts next week on a brand new play area outside the playcentre.

Hello to Gemma Paddock, who begins today as our new temporary shop / resource worker and good luck to Yvonne, who has moved on to a brand new post in Arrow Park maternity ward.

Congratulations to Steve Chan who graduated with a BA Honours degree in Playwork from Leeds Metropolitan University.

26.07.04 Special Needs Summer Scheme

Wirral Play Council's Special Needs group will be providing a summer scheme for up to 500 children with a wide range of disabilities over the next four weeks.  Planned events include a fashion parade, a karaoke competition, and an Alice in Wonderland week, as well as a sports day to be held in Prenton on the 11th & 12th August.

Playworker training began today for all the summer staff.  In two weeks time the real fun starts as the summer playschemes open.

09.07.04 Wirral Show

Wirral Play Council had a stand at this year's Wirral Show at King's Promenade, New Brighton.  Staff from Wirral Play Council and PlaySpaces were in attendance promoting the work that we do.

27.05.04 Mayor Unveils Play Mosaic

Wirral Play Council held its Open Day today with the Mayor of Wirral Councillor W. Knock and representatives from Metropolitan Borough of Wirral Youth & Community in attendance.
Berner Street was closed to traffic so the Mayor could unveil the commemorative mosaic.  Members then had the opportunity to be shown around the Development Centre and see what goes on inside.

25.05.04 WPC Mosaic Completed

Paddy Mulligan, from PlaySpaces, has finished the Wirral Play Council mosaic on the side of the building in time for the Open Day.

10.05.04 WPC Play Conference

Wirral Play Council is to hold a Play Conference on Wednesday, 24th November, 2004, at Leasowe Castle.  If you wish to find out more information, please contact us and we'll send you details as they are finalised.

04.05.04 Staff Changes

We welcome Jenny Akkurt and Natalie Higginson to the PlaySpaces team and say good luck to Louise James who is now in post at Livingstone street Play & Community Centre and Jo Hales who is working temporarily for Playwork+.

26.04.04 Wirral Play Council Mosaic

Work began at the Wirral Play Development Centre on a mosaic to celebrate 30 years of play provision, to be unveiled on our Open Day.

19.04.04 Easter Success

The WPC Special Needs Scheme had 172 children attending over the Easter period.  The children enjoyed trips out to Chester Zoo and also went ten pin Bowling.  Thanks go to the participants of the Wirral Egg Run who donated chocolate eggs for all the children.
The Outreach Play Project, PlaySpaces, provided play opportunities at 11 sites around the Wirral with an attendance of over 200 children.  Activities included, Easter egg hunts on Bidston Hill and bouncy castles in Seacombe.

16.04.04 Wirral Play Council Open Day

An open day is to be held at the Wirral Play Development Centre on 27th May, from 12 noon to 2.00 PM.
The Mayor of Wirral councillor W. Knock will unveil a mosaic commemorating Wirral Play Council's 30 years service.
All members are welcome to attend.  Light refreshments will be served.

05.04.04 Second Year Funding for PlaySpaces Project

Wirral Play Council's, PlaySpaces project, has been successful in obtaining continuation funding from the Children's Society.

Playwork+ receives its fourth year of funding.

04.04.04 Play For All Project Ends

Play For All, part of the government's 2003 Street Crime Initiative, has come to an end after 15-months of funding by the Children's Society.  The project was very successful in supporting children diagnosed with ADHD.

22.03.04 Easter Holiday Playscheme

Starting 5th April until 16th April, Wirral Play Council will be running a closed access Easter playscheme for children, aged 5-14 years, with Special Needs.

12.03.04 Farewell, Rachel

Rachel Clough, our shop/resource worker, leaves us to go to another job with the Junior Youth Inclusion project.  We wish her all the best in her new post.
